Advent The advent begins four weeks before Christmas. We make an advent ring with four candles on it and light one on the first Sunday in the Advent, the next Sunday two candles etc. 

 

December 12th The first of our thirteen jolasveinar (Santa Clauses) arrives from the mountains. Each day one more arrives. The 25th the first one goes back, one each day and the 6th of January the last one goes and then the Christmas is over. 

 

December 23rd Thorlaksmessa (The Mass of Thorlak, our only Icelandic saint). It is common to decorate the Christmas tree on that day.and eat Skata (see Christmas food). 

 

December 24th Christmas Eve.At six o'clock many people go to Church to attend Mass. After dinner we open our Christmas presents. 

 

December 25th Christmas Day 

 

December 26th Second day of Christmas. People visit their families. 

 

December 31st New Years Eve. ( We call it Old Years Eve). We shoot fireworks (tons of them ) and we also have bonfires. 

 

January 1st New Years Day. We sleep. 

 

January 6th Last day of Christmas. (We call it the Thirteenth)
