max brand prize 2002
"the social construction of technology"

Max Brand Composer and Pioneer of Electronic Music (1896-1980) decreed that all future profits from performances of his works be used to establish a prize for young, contemporary composers working in the realm of electronic acoustics and related areas. (max brand archiv)

We are happy to announce the winners of the Max Brand Prize 2002.

Max Brand Prize, Jury Decision:

By awarding the prize to two winners, the jury gave its view on the current situation of electronic music. The two winners represent not only the diverse pool of applicants, but also current developments in electronic music. The jury decided to split this year's Max Brand Prize between two winners because their works demonstrate how artists today oscillate between two extremes: highly conceptual approaches, on the one hand, and sound-oriented projects, on the other. Each winner represents one of these two extremes: Austrian artist Volkmar Klien consistently derives his noise-like sounds from extramusical sources from technological and social processes. steinbrüchel from Switzerland, by contrast, conceive of silence as a technological, digital void and carefully shape it into musical form.

The jury emphasized that it considered the polarity of and difference between these two award-winning works as paradigms: for today's music in general, but especially for the phonoTAKTIK festival, whose open attitude towards technological discourse calls for such a decision. In these trail-blazing and solution-oriented projects, Max Brand's intellectual heritage comes to life.

By way of conclusion, the jury remarked that the two recipients were chosen from over 40 international applications. The jurors did not know the applicants' identities before they had reached their decision. The two winners, both in their early thirties, merit further international recognition.

Our best wishes to the winners!

The prize of EURO 6,000 (2 times EURO 3,000) will be awarded during the phonoTAKTIK festival in New York on Max Brand's birthday, April 26. Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, director of the Austrian Cultural Forum, will honor the recipients at the ACF's new building.
