Informationen zur Veranstaltung
Ein außergewöhnliches, bisher nicht veröffentlichtes Filmdokument aus
dem Jahr 1975 erlebt im Österreichischen Filmmuseum seine erste
Kinopräsentation. Der Filmemacher Claude Lanzmann drehte im Zuge der
Arbeit an seinem epochalen Werk Shoah in Rom ein langes und
beeindruckendes Gespräch mit dem Wiener Rabbiner Benjamin Murmelstein
(1905?1989).
Im Zentrum stand Murmelsteins ambivalente Rolle als hochrangiger
jüdischer Funktionär der von Eichmann kontrollierten Israelitischen
Kultusgemeinde Wien in der NS-Zeit und als "Judenältester" des Ghettos
Theresienstadt. Das Material fand keinen Eingang in Shoah und liegt im
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum ungeschnitten vor.
Gezeigt werden jene rund fünf Stunden des über elfstündigen
"Film-Gesprächs", die Benjamin Murmelsteins Zeit in Wien betreffen. Zu
erleben ist ein scharfsinniger, hochgebildeter Mann, der sich selbst als
"der letzte der Ungerechten" bezeichnete. Seine Kooperation mit den
NS-Behörden wurde nach 1945 weithin als Skandal empfunden.
Vor der zweiteiligen Präsentation des Filmdokuments findet ein
Podiumsgespräch zum historischen Hintergrund statt. Claude Lanzmann wird
in einem Publikumsgespräch über seine Filmarbeit mit Benjamin
Murmelstein berichten.
Eine gemeinsame Veranstaltung mit dem Wiener Wiesenthal Institut für
Holocaust-Studien, in Kooperation mit der Israelitischen Kultusgemeinde
Wien, dem Jüdischen Museum Wien und dem United States Holocaust Memorial
Museum.
Teile des Filmmaterials sind bis 21. Oktober im Rahmen der Ausstellung
"Ordnung muss sein. Das Archiv der Israelitischen Kultusgemeinde Wien"
im Jüdischen Museum zu sehen (www.jmw.at).
