Fernsehdokumentation über einen Zeitzeugen des "Anschlusses", der weiter gegen die Nazis kämpft
Aus der Vielzahl der TV-Dokus, die zum Gedenken an 1938 gesendet werden, ragt "Der Mann auf dem Balkon: Rudolf Gelbard" durch starke Gegenwartsbezogenheit heraus. Im Porträt des Wiener KZ-Überlebenden und "Homo Politikus", das

schildert Gelbard, wie er mit anderen Antifaschisten 1959 bei der Schiller-Feier, der ersten rechtsextremen Großveranstaltung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in Wien, alte und neue Nazis konfrontierte.
Mehr zum ThemaErfolg Sorgenfrei in die Zukunft! bezahlte EinschaltungZeitzeuge war er von Judenerniedrigungen im Wien des Jahres 1938 ebenso wie von Demos für den antisemitischen Universitätsprofessor Taras Borodajkewycz 1965, wo Rechtsextremisten "Hoch Auschwitz" riefen. Seine mit enormem Faktenwissen über die Shoa fundierten Aktivitäten haben Gelbard, der auch viele Kriegsverbrecherprozesse beobachtete, Warnungen vor seiner Person in Neonazi-Broschüren eingebracht.
Im Porträt des Dokumentarfilmers Kurt Brazda erinnert sich Gelbard, wie er als Achtjähriger mit dem Judenstern die Zeit nach dem Anschluss erlebte. Zu Wohnungsverlust und Hunger, zum Entzug aller Rechte, auch dem in ein Kino oder ein Café zu gehen, worunter seine Familie litt, kam für den Buben noch die ständige Gefahr einer Konfrontation mit Hitlerjungen, deren Prügel er durch urwienerisches Auftreten entging. Das half später manchmal auch im KZ Theresienstadt, in das er mit seiner Familie 1942 verschleppt wurde.
Kein "Vorzeige-KZ"
Mit dem Filmteam fuhr Gelbard noch einmal ins nordböhmische Terezín, ehemals kaiserliche Garnison, in deren feuchte Festungsanlage damals nach und nach 140.000 Juden gepfercht (und großteils in Vernichtungslager weitertransportiert) wurden. Etliche Wächter waren Wiener mit ordinärem Spruch, die Gefangene, die sie verstanden, anders behandelten als andere. Im Film geht Gelbard durch die kasernenartigen Blocks, die jetzt wieder Wohnungen beherbergen, damals aber extrem enges, mit Dreistockbetten vollgeräumtes Gefängnis für insgesamt 15.000 Kinder waren, von denen nur hundert überlebten. Es ärgert Gelbard, dass Theresienstadt noch heute als weniger grausiges "Vorzeige-KZ" betrachtet wird, worin er einen späten Erfolg der Propaganda Hitlers sieht.
Seinen persönlichen Sieg empfand Gelbard 1995, als auf dem Wiener Heldenplatz 50.000 das Wiedererstehen Österreichs feierten: Im strömenden Regen trat der Überlebende auf den Balkon, von dem aus Hitler Österreichs Untergang verkündet hatte. (Erhard Stackl/DER STANDARD, Printausgabe, 21.3.2008)
