"Die Arbeiterklasse darf sich nicht als politische Partei konstituieren, sie darf unter keinem Vorwand eine politische Aktion unternehmen, weil der Kampf gegen den Staat die Anerkennung des Staats ist, und das steht im Widerspruch zu den ewigen Prinzipien! Die Arbeiter dürfen keine Streiks führen, denn Kräfte vergeuden, um die Erhöhung des Arbeitslohnes zu erreichen oder seine Kürzung zu verhindern, heißt das System der Lohnarbeit anerkennen, und das steht im Widerspruch zu den ewigen Prinzipien der Befreiung der Arbeiterklasse!
Wenn sich die Arbeiter in ihrem politischen Kampf gegen den bürgerlichen Staat vereinigen, nur um Konzessionen zu erreichen, dann schließen sie Kompromisse, und das steht im Widerspruch zu den ewigen Prinzipien! Man muß daher jede friedliche Bewegung verdammen, wie sie die englischen und amerikanischen Arbeiter aus schlechter Gewohnheit unternehmen. Die Arbeiter sollen nicht ihre Kräfte vergeuden, um eine legale Grenze des Arbeitstages zu erreichen, denn das heißt, Kompromisse mit den Unternehmern schließen, die dann die Arbeiter nur noch 10 oder 12 Stunden statt 14 oder 16 ausbeuten könnten. Desgleichen sollen sie sich nicht bemühen, das gesetzliche Verbot der Fabrikarbeit von Mädchen unter zehn Jahren zu erreichen, denn durch dieses Mittel wird noch nicht die Ausbeutung der Knaben unter zehn Jahren aufgehoben; sie gehen dadurch einen neuen Kompromiß ein, und das verstößt gegen die Reinheit der ewigen Prinzipien!
Noch weniger dürfen die Arbeiter verlangen, daß, wie es in der amerikanischen Republik geschieht, der Staat, dessen Budget auf Kosten der Arbeiterklasse aufgestellt wird, verpflichtet werden soll, den Kindern der Arbeiter Grundschulbildung zu gewähren, denn Grundschulbildung ist noch nicht Universalbildung. Es ist besser, wenn die Arbeiter und Arbeiterinnen nicht lesen, nicht schreiben, nicht rechnen können, als daß sie den Unterricht von einem Lehrer einer staatlichen Schule bekommen. Es ist bedeutend besser, wenn Unwissenheit und eine tägliche Arbeit von 16 Stunden die Arbeiterklasse abstumpfen, als daß die ewigen Prinzipien verletzt werden!
Wenn der politische Kampf der Arbeiterklasse gewaltsame Formen annimmt, wenn die Arbeiter an Stelle der Diktatur der Bourgeoisie ihre revolutionäre Diktatur setzen, dann begehen sie das schreckliche Verbrechen der Prinzipienverletzung, weil sie um der Befriedigung ihrer kläglichen profanen Tagesbedürfnisse willen, um der Brechung des Widerstandes der Bourgeoisie willen, dem Staate eine revolutionäre und vorübergehende Form geben, statt die Waffen niederzulegen und den Staat abzuschaffen. Die Arbeiter dürfen keine einzelnen Gewerksgenossenschaften für jeden Beruf bilden, weil sie damit die gesellschaftliche Arbeitsteilung, wie sie in der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft existiert, verewigen; diese Arbeitsteilung, die die Arbeiter trennt, ist doch die wirkliche Grundlage ihrer Sklaverei.
Mit einem Wort, die Arbeiter sollen die Hände verschränken und ihre Zeit nicht für politische und ökonomische Bewegungen verschwenden. All diese Bewegungen können ihnen nichts als unmittelbare Resultate bringen. Als wirklich religiöse Leute müssen sie, die Tagesbedürfnisse verachtend, voller Glauben ausrufen: Gekreuziget werde unsere Klasse, untergehen möge unsere Rasse, doch die ewigen Prinzipien müssen makellos bleiben! Wie fromme Christen müssen sie den Worten des Priesters glauben, die Güter dieser Erde verachten und nur danach trachten, das Paradies zu gewinnen. Lesen sie statt Paradies die soziale Liquidation, die an einem schönen Tag in irgendeinem Krähwinkel der Welt vor sich gehen wird, niemand weiß, wie und von wem verwirklicht, und die Mystifikation ist voll und ganz dieselbe.
In Erwartung dieser famosen sozialen Liquidation muß sich also die Arbeiterklasse wie eine Herde wohlgenährter Schafe anständig benehmen, die Regierung in Ruhe lassen, die Polizei fürchten, die Gesetze achten und ohne Murren das Kanonenfutter liefern.
In ihrem alltäglichen praktischen Leben müssen die Arbeiter die gehorsamsten Diener des Staats sein, in ihrem Innern aber müssen sie auf das energischste gegen seine Existenz protestieren und ihm ihre tiefe theoretische Verachtung durch Kaufen und Lesen von literarischen Traktaten über die Abschaffung des Staats bekunden; sie müssen sich aber hüten, der kapitalistischen Ordnung einen anderen Widerstand entgegenzusetzen als Deklamationen über die Gesellschaft der Zukunft, in der die Existenz dieser verhaßten Ordnung aufhören wird!"
Niemand wird bestreiten, daß die Apostel des politischen Indifferentismus, hätten sie sich so klar ausgesprochen, von der Arbeiterklasse längst zum Teufel gejagt worden wären; die Arbeiterklasse hätte das als Beleidigung doktrinärer Bourgeois und verkommener Edelleute aufgefaßt, die so dumm oder so naiv sind, ihr jedes reale Kampfmittel zu verweigern, weil man all diese Kampfmittel der heutigen Gesellschaft entnehmen muß und weil die fatalen Bedingungen dieses Kampfes das Unglück haben, sich nicht den idealistischen Phantasien anzupassen, die diese Doktoren der Sozialwissenschaft unter den Namen Freiheit, Autonomie, Anarchie zur Gottheit erhoben haben. Doch ist jetzt die Bewegung der Arbeiterklasse so stark, daß diese philanthropischen Sektierer nicht mehr den Mut haben, über den ökonomischen Kampf dieselben großen Wahrheiten zu wiederholen, die sie unaufhörlich über den politischen Kampf proklamierten. Sie sind zu feige, um diese Wahrheiten auch auf die Streiks, Koalitionen, Gewerksgenossenschaften, auf die Gesetze über Frauen- und Kinderarbeit, über die Beschränkung des Arbeitstages etc. etc. anzuwenden.
