President of Hungarian Movement for Democratic Society (TDM),
Attila VAJNAI has been detained on Saturday by the police in Budapest,
because having a red star distinctive on his cloth during a ceremony at
the monument of soviet soldiers died in the Second World War for the
liberation of Hungary. Vajnai was participating together with other
people at the commemoration, when police has intervened arresting
him. TDM is member organisation of Hungarian Social Forum and active
partner of European Social Forum. This was the first time, that
hungarian authorities have perpetrated a political detention for reason
of red star. Red star is one of symboles in Hungary forbidden by law
as „symbol of dictatorship”. Hungary will be the only country in EU from
1st of Mai, where red star is prohibeted by the law.
Hungarian Social Forum expresses its total solidarity with the
President of TDM, it condemns his detention, asks the immediate
liberation of Vajnai, and invites all the organisations of the European
Social Forum to do the same.
